The Humboldt Crabs wasted no time getting the 2022 season rolling on Friday, scoring five runs in the first inning en route to a 13-0 drubbing of the Humboldt Eagles on opening night.

The Arcata Ball Park was packed with fans, thanks to a confluence of factors – Opening Night, the local opponent featuring tons of local talent, and the possibility of rain later in the weekend – and the Crabs put on a show. Fans didn’t have to wait long for the first “Freeway Balls” of the season, as Cary Arbolida and Tyler Davis both put balls on U.S. 101 in the second inning, and Arbolida added another one the next inning.

Caleb Ruiz, a local product and the only returning player from 2021, got the start on the bump and picked up right where he left off a year ago, hurling five shutout innings. Nick Perryman and Eureka’s Hayden Bode finished off the shutout.
