The Humboldt Crabs turned on the power this week in a pair of wins against Seals Baseball Club, and Zack McCoy supplied most of it.
McCoy hit his first homer of the year in the first inning of Tuesday's 13-3 win, and topped that with a grand slam early in Wednesday's contest to completely erase an early 4-0 deficit as the Crabs finished the sweep with a 12-8 victory on Wednesday.
Cullen Hendrickson also homered Tuesday — on the first pitch he saw in a Crabs uniform. Kyle Moses stayed hot, going 3-for-3 from the leadoff spot as the team totaled 16 hits in just six innings of work. Ruben Rios threw five solid innings for the win.
Wednesday's game was a somewhat sloppy contest, as the teams combined to issue 16 walks. The Seals took advantage of two walks and an error in the first as they went up 3-0 in the first, and added another run in the second.
But that lead was short-lived, as walks helped fuel the Crabs' rally in the second. Trent Goodrich started things with a one-out double, then Nick Minteer and Chris Akmon drew consecutive walks. One out later, Hendrickson was hit by a pitch, forcing in the Crabs' first run and bringing McCoy to the plate.
In a flash, McCoy had his second home run of the weekend and the Crabs were leading 5-4. The Seals, however, showed much more fight in this game, and they tied the game with a homer of their own in the third, and went ahead 6-5 in the fourth. However, two bases-loaded walks put the Crabs ahead to stay in the bottom of the inning.
Cameron Law got the win in relief of Connor Chase.
The Crabs resume league play on Friday, welcoming the Neptune Beach Pearl to town, and the weekend is also chock full of special events! Friday will be Chris and Rachel's wedding on the field before the game starts. Saturday is Crabs Apparel Night. Many of you wear the red and blue all the time already, but everyone needs to step it up a notch and fill the place up with Crabs gear. And then on Sunday, it's Sequoia Humane Society Day, and adoptable dogs will ben in the park.
Tickets are available at the box office, as well as several local outlets. It should be quite a weekend, so come on out!
