SJSU's Karson Klauer named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, David Popkins is Big West Player of the Week after torrid streak at UC Davis

ARCATA (May 27, 2010) — Both a member of the 2009 Humboldt Crabs team and the incoming 2010 squad were recognized this week for their achievements at the college level.

Karson Klauer, a senior at San Jose State who hit .297 as the Crabs' regular second baseman a year ago was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Baseball Third Team for excellence both on the field and in the classroom.

And David Popkins, whom fans will meet when this season starts next week, was honored as the Big West Player of the Week after tearing it up over the past five games for UC Davis, helping the Aggies go 4-1 over that stretch.

Klauer, a team co-captain and the Spartans' first Academic All-American in any sport in 13 years, maintained a 3.91 GPA in Business Administration at SJSU — the highest for a male athlete in school history — and this season is batting a career-best .317, good for third-best on the team.

Popkins had himself quite a week for the aggies. He batted .625 (15-for-24) with two home runs, two triples and 12 RBIs, five of which came in a perfect 4-for-4 outing against UC Santa Barbara in which he drove in the winning run in the 10th. And if that weren't enough, he started and won a game on the mound against Santa Clara.

Popkins now leads UC Davis in hitting (.387), hits (67), RBIs (38) and runs (38) as they head into the final week of their season.
