2008 Humboldt Steelheads
Formed in 1996, The Humboldt Steelheads (formerly the All-Stars) seek to provide opportunities for local college baseball players to improve their abilities and to showcase their talents. The Steelheads also welcome former college baseball players who want to continue playing competitive baseball. It should be noted that the Humboldt Crabs are the principal sponsor and supporter of the Steelheads and have been since the team was formed 12 years ago.
Thirty-one games have been scheduled for 2008, the most in Steelheads history. This summer’s season will begin June 7th and end July 31st. The Steelheads posted a 15-13 record in 2007 and look to improve upon the 15 win season which was the most wins ever in the Steelheads 12 year history. The team will play 13 of its 19 home games at the Arcata Ballpark, the home of the Humboldt Crabs. Manager David Sharp remarked, “The Crabs were instrumental in scheduling 8 extra games for us against teams that will be traveling to play mid-week games against them. This provides us with more competitive opponents and the chance to play at the Arcata Ballpark.”
The Steelheads have proven to be beneficial to the Crabs as the list of former Steelheads to go on and play for the Crabs continues to grow. Former Steelheads who have gone on to play for the Crabs include Robbie Apo (RHP – Eureka High), Eric Bess (LHP – Fortuna High), Joe Trigeiro (RHP – Arcata High), Tyson Fisher (1B – Fortuna High), Matt Jones (OF – Eureka High), Hop Sullivan (SS – McKinleyville High), Zach Smith (Utility – Eureka High), and Greg Fisher (LHP – Arcata High).
This summer, former Steelhead Greg Fisher (LHP) from Arcata High/CSU Monterey Bay will return to the Crabs pitching staff after debuting with the team in 2007. Zach Smith (Utility) from Eureka High/Bethany College will also return to the Crabs as a player/assistant coach. Zach received the "Coach's Award" from the Crabs last summer for his hard work and great attitude. Coach Sharp says, "It’s exciting when local players like Greg and Zach get the opportunity to play for the Crabs. Both grew up following the Crabs, hoping that someday they would get the chance to play for the Crabs. Making their roster shows how hard they have worked to get better and we certainly wish them luck."
The Steelheads have proven to be a thorn in the side of their perceived "big brothers" in recent years. They split their season series with the Crabs in 2005, including a win in the Championship Game of the inaugural "Humboldt County Bragging Rights Tournament", and followed that up with a third win in 2006.
General Manager Greg Shanahan is entering his 13th season with the Steelheads. A former pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Humboldt Crabs, Shanahan has been instrumental in running the organization since its inception. Manager David Sharp enters his 6th season as Manager of the club and 10th season of summer college baseball experience. Sharp pitched for the Crabs from 1999 - 2002. Shanahan and Sharp will be joined by first year coaches Grant Manzi and Joe Ponte. Manzi spent the past 5 seasons as an infielder for the Steelheads and is a graduate of Ferndale High School. Ponte roamed the outfield for the Steelheads the past 4 years and is a graduate of St. Bernard’s High School. Both Shanahan and Sharp are St. Bernard’s graduates.
