Humboldt Crabs Baseball

Arcata, CA —After having a difficult time generating consistent offense on Sunday, it was much of the same on Monday evening as the Crabs fell to the Ports 5-2 at the Arcata Ball Park.
The Crabs (2-2) committed three errors Monday, two of them in the 2nd inning leading to three runs being scored. After Branson Umbarger and Austin Garcia led off the inning with consecutive singles for the Ports, Mark Johnson bunted down the third base line and Matthew Hernandez threw the ball away.
With Umbarger coming home, Jayson Newman threw to the plate to try and get him, but the throw got away from catcher Jacob Thurber, allowing the second runner Garcia to come in as well.
At that point, the Ports had a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. They got their first two runs on a two run home run by second baseman Ivan Sanchez in the top of the first. From there the Crabs had to play catch-up.
They scored their first run in the bottom of the second. Shortstop Michael Perri led off with a double, advanced to third on a flyout by Jacob Thurber, and scored on an RBI groundout by Logan Busch.
The Crabs wouldn’t get their second run until the eighth inning when James Outman started things with a single. With one out, he advanced to third on a Jayson Newman groundball that couldn’t be handled by shortstop Isaac Ortiz.
Perri hit a groundball to Ortiz, who turned to second for the force out, but Perri was able to hustle out and beat the double play, scoring Outman.
Ports starter Christian Marquez went six innings and allowed only one earned run, on four hits, with six strikeouts and four walks. Alex Guerrero finished the game for San Leandro allowing his only run and hit in the 8th.
Crabs starter Matthew Hernandez had his struggles on Monday, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk with no strikeouts. The Crabs bullpen kept San Leandro stuck at port, with no runs and only seven hits against them in 6 2/3 innings.
“You will see our bullpen be used heavily throughout the summer,” Crabs manager Tyson Fisher said. “I want to get these guys some innings and let them get some work in.”
Regarding the defense, Fisher says getting better is a matter of confidence.
“These guys just need to stay confident,” Fisher explained, “They are getting some work in at positions that they are going to be playing in the spring.”
“It’s nice to have come back and be able to play again tomorrow,” Perri said after the game, “we can put this game behind us and get ready to face the Ports again tomorrow.”
San Leandro is in town for one more game, as the Crabs look to avoid the sweep. Game time is at 7pm, with the front gates opening at 6pm.
