ARCATA — Humboldt Crabs manager Robin Guiver has finalized his staff of assistant coaches for the 2017 campaign. Crabs alumni and Feather River College assistant coach Ryan Dettman will be added to the Crabs roster. He will join pitching coach Eric Giacone and Brad Morgan for the 74th consecutive year of Crabs baseball on the North Coast. Fans may remember Dettman was an outfielder for the Crabs during the summer of 2012, while he was playing at Oregon State University.

Dettman graduated from Del Campo High School in the Sacramento area in 2008 and played for the American River College Beavers in 2010 and 2011, graduating with an AA degree.  He moved onto Oregon State University, playing for the Beavers in 2012 and 2013 and earning a Bachelor’s degree in sociology. While at American River, Ryan earned All-Nor Cal honors as an outfielder and was selected to the Big 8 All-Conference team. .

Dettman began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Oregon. He then spent the summer of 2013 coaching the Corvallis Richey’s Market American Legion team, where he helped guide the team to a state tournament appearance. For the past three years, he has spent time coaching in the Chico area, where he helped out with the Chico Aces travel ball team at all age levels.

Dettman enters his first season with the Golden Eagles at Feather River College. His primary responsibilities are coaching the outfielders and hitters. He also will be involved with recruiting and the scouting of opponents throughout the season. Feather River has won 9 of the last 10 Golden Valley Conference championships and advanced to the Final Four in 2013.

As Crabs assistant coach, Dettman hopes to continue to build on the success of past Crabs teams and players. He wants to help build the baseball skills and knowledge of new players. “We want to help continue teaching these young men the required skills necessary in all facets of the game in order to continue succeeding in this wonderful game,” he said.

“Playing for the Crabs was a special experience that not many college athletes get to enjoy,” he added. “There is a reason the Crabs are one of the longest running summer ball programs in the country.”
