While leading a powerful St. Bernard's High team, Andrew Ayers won an NCS title at the Arcata Ball Park. This summer he'll call the park home.

ARCATA (May 25, 2010) — Former St. Bernard's standout Andrew Ayers will join the Crabs for the 2010 season.

Team manager Matt Nutter and head coach Robin Guiver have been admirers of Ayers for some time and this week announced that the two-time Little Five MVP will be on the roster for the summer season.

"The first thing about Andrew is he's a winner and just a great all-around athlete," Nutter said. "And I think he brings good competitiveness to the team. We're just happy to have him on board."

Ayers, a 2009 graduate of St. Bernard's, was a key member of the Crusaders' back-to-back-to-back North Coast Section championship teams and was named MVP of the Little Five in both his junior and senior seasons. Ayers, who pitched a complete-game three hitter in the NCS championship game, played four years for the Crusaders and was named all-league each season.

This year, Ayers has been starring at second base for Sac State, where he is hitting .344 in 22 appearances, including fifteen starts.

And Nutter is happy to have another local star on his roster, joining Eureka's Brad Morgan and Zack O'Hanen.

"I think that's real important," Nutter said. "He's a local kid starting for a Division-I team. And as long as he can do that, he's going to go places."

Ayers' stock has risen as the season has progressed, recently starring in a dramatic 13-12 win over Cal State Northridge as the Hornets overcame an early seven-run deficit as well as leading the Hornets to an 11-6 win over Hawaii.

Ayers also played basketball and football at St. Bernard's.
